Loops in the gluon emission amplitude: reggeization from the Glauber scattering

It is shown that in the Glauber scattering of a fast quark in the external field loop corrections to the gluon emission amplitude due to virtual softer gluon after renormalization coincide with a correction due to reggeization of the exchanged gluon in the BFKL picture.Comment: 26 pages, 10 figure

Large Scale Rapidity Correlations in Heavy Ion Collisions

We discuss particle production mechanisms for heavy ion collisions. We present an argument demonstrating how the fluctuations of the number of produced particles in a series of classical emissions can account for KNO scaling. We predict rapidity correlations in the particle production in the event by event analysis of heavy ion collisions on the rapidity scales of the order of one over the strong coupling constant.Comment: REVTeX, 13 pages, 3 figure

Energy Loss of a Heavy Fermion in an Anisotropic QED Plasma

We compute the leading-order collisional energy loss of a heavy fermion propagating in a QED plasma with an electron distribution function which is anisotropic in momentum space. We show that in the presence of such anisotropies there can be a significant directional dependence of the heavy fermion energy loss with the effect being quite large for highly-relativistic velocities. We also repeat the analysis of the isotropic case more carefully and show that the final result depends on the intermediate scale used to separate hard and soft contributions to the energy loss. We then show that the canonical isotropic result is obtained in the weak-coupling limit. For intermediate-coupling we use the residual scale dependence as a measure of our theoretical uncertainty. We also discuss complications which could arise due to the presence of unstable soft photonic modes and demonstrate that the calculation of the energy loss is safe.Comment: 19 pages, 18 figures. v2 - Correction to normalization of numerical results; some figures modified as a result; discussion of role of unstable modes added along with two new figure

Small-x F_2 Structure Function of a Nucleus Including Multiple Pomeron Exchanges

    Get PDF
We derive an equation determining the small-x evolution of the F_2 structure function of a large nucleus which includes all multiple pomeron exchanges in the leading logarithmic approximation using Mueller's dipole model. We show that in the double leading logarithmic limit this evolution equation reduces to the GLR equation.Comment: REVTeX, 11 pages, 4 figures, few minor changes include

BKP states in the inclusive gluon production

Inclusive cross-section for gluon production is calculated by the dispersion technique in the NLO in the perturbative QCD with a large number of colours. The found cross-section coincides with the one derived in the dipole picture. No trace of the BKP states is found.Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures. Appendix with a new observation added. Photon production in high energy proton-nucleus collisions

We calculate the photon production cross-section in pApA collisions under the assumption that the nucleus has reached the saturation regime, while the proton can be described by the standard parton distribution functions. We show that due to the strong classical field O(1/g)O(1/g) of the nucleus, bremsstrahlung diagrams become dominant over the direct photon diagrams. In particular, we show that γ\gamma-jet transverse momentum spectrum and correlations are very sensitive to gluon saturation effects in the nucleus.Comment: 15 pages, 2 figure

Hadron-nucleus scattering in the local reggeon model with pomeron loops for realistic nuclei

Contribution of simplest loops for hadron-nucleus scattering cross-sections is studied in the Local Reggeon Field Theory with a supercritical pomeron. It is shown that inside the nucleus the supercritical pomeron transforms into a subcritical one, so that perturbative treatment becomes possible. The pomeron intercept becomes complex, which leads to oscillations in the cross-sections.Comment: 13 pages, 6 figure

Gluon Radiation and Coherent States in Ultrarelativistic Nuclear Collisions

    Get PDF
We explore the correspondence between classical gluon radiation and quantum radiation in a coherent state for gluons produced in ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. The expectation value of the invariant momentum distribution of gluons in the coherent state is found to agree with the gluon number distribution obtained classically from the solution of the Yang-Mills equations. A criterion for the applicability of the coherent state formalism to the problem of radiation in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions is discussed. This criterion is found to be fulfilled for midrapidity gluons with perturbative transverse momenta larger than about 1-2 GeV and produced in collisions between valence partons.Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, RevTeX (with epsf, psfig style files

    Parton Saturation-An Overview

    Get PDF
The idea of partons and the utility of using light-cone gauge in QCD are introduced. Saturation of quark and gluon distributions are discussed using simple models and in a more general context. The Golec-Biernat W\usthoff model and some simple phenomenology are described. A simple, but realistic, equation for unitary, the Kovchegov equation, is discussed, and an elementary derivation of the JIMWLK equation is given.Comment: Cargese Lectures, 34 pages, 19 figure

Cronin Effect and High-p_T Suppression in pA Collisions

We review the predictions of the theory of Color Glass Condensate for gluon production cross section in p(d)A collisions. We demonstrate that at moderate energies, when the gluon production cross section can be calculated in the framework of McLerran-Venugopalan model, it has only partonic level Cronin effect in it. At higher energies/rapidities corresponding to smaller values of Bjorken x quantum evolution becomes important. The effect of quantum evolution at higher energies/rapidities is to introduce suppression of high-p_T gluons slightly decreasing the Cronin enhancement. At still higher energies/rapidities quantum evolution leads to suppression of produced gluons at all values of p_T.Comment: 32 pages, 8 figures, v2: extended and improved discussion, references adde
